Helping Educators Master the Take Flight Dyslexia Intervention

Understanding Academic Language Therapist Training
At the Springfield Center for Dyslexia and Learning, we’re dedicated to empowering teachers and specialists with the tools to help students overcome reading challenges.
Our Academic Language Therapist Training is a comprehensive, two-year professional program that utilizes Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia, developed by the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
This evidence-based training is grounded in the Orton-Gillingham approach, focusing on multisensory, structured literacy instruction that directly targets the five essential components of reading:
- Phonemic Awareness
- Phonics
- Fluency
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension
Through hands-on instruction, mentorship, and ongoing support, participants learn how to help struggling readers build the foundational skills for lifelong literacy.
What You’ll Learn
During this two-year course, trainees gain a deep understanding of:
- The structure of the English language and how to teach it effectively
- Techniques for identifying and addressing reading difficulties in students with dyslexia
- How to deliver structured, sequential literacy lessons using the Take Flight curriculum
- Progress-monitoring and data-driven instruction
- Strategies for supporting both students and classroom teachers
Participants complete 120 hours of direct instruction, supervised practicum experiences, and monthly professional workshops to reinforce their learning.
